When seeking a career opportunities, it is almost a given that one needs a higher form of education. It is a proven fact that those whom possess a college degree make significantly more than those that hold a GED or high school diploma. They often make at least 50% to as much as 100% more than their non-degree counterparts.

One of the biggest factors though in obtaining a college degree is financing. There are many obstacles to overcome when attempting to pay for your college education. Depending on where the student attends, it could cost as much as $50,000 per year. This is much more than the family median income in many states. There are many parents who actually believe it is not their responsibility to finance a child’s education, though they state its importance and urge them to attend. It can be difficult for a student to get financial aid if their parents make too much money. This creates a burden on the prospective student on where to get financing.

This is where federal grants come in to play. Because the government puts a high emphasis on education, it has put aside a large proportion of its budget to help get students the money they need and deserve as long as they are qualified. This is a great way to help ease the burden a college education can place on the family. Grants usually do not have to be paid back as long as the student maintains a minimum grade point average and stays drug free. They are also tax free, so the student or their family will not have to pay income taxes on them. They are generally low on the requirements as far as strings attached. There are possibly other restrictions depending on the type of grant available to them, there are over 1500 government grants, whether they be city, state or federal, available to the student.

There is a education grant that caters to about every student situation whether they are going for an undergraduate degree or graduate degree. Also, there are many grants available for homeless veterans and veterans that need to renter the workforce. There are too many options available to those who qualify than can be listed here.

Finding a grant is relatively easy. You can go to the government website cfda.gov to find a listing of available grants. You will need to do a detailed search to find out ones that you may be qualified for. This website will give you information on writing grant proposals and as well as new programs and tips on qualifying for assistance. It also mentions new programs and offers a historical index on what grants were awarded. Though these are federal grants only, there are literally thousands of other state, private and local grants that the prospective student may be eligible for. If you have a special need or are in a special circumstance, there is usually a grant that will fit that situation. Grants may also be found if you go to the school and ask them, a lot of times they will have information that will guide you in the right direction. Though they usually will not have or know everything that is available to the student.

Before applying for the grant, basic qualifications include that the student be in a family that pays taxes, or pays taxes themselves and be a lawful United States citizen. There may be differences in this requirement, but generally speaking, this rings true. You will need to apply for a Free Application for Student Financial Aid at your school. This will determine what federal grants you are eligible for. You usually do not have to write a proposal for this sort of grant, it is done automatically through the students school. The amount of the Pell grant is determined by your actual need and the information that you submit on your form.

Although applying for a grant can be easy at times, or time consuming at other times, it is always worth the effort if you are approved for the grant. There are varying degrees of complexity in the grant process. Sometimes it is as easy as filling out a Federal Student Aid paper or as difficult as filling out extreme amounts of paperwork and writing a detailed proposal. In the end, the prospective student needs to take their time, do what is required and hope for the best.
