Being a single mother at a very young age can be difficult. Not only will you need to worry about the welfare of your child, you also have to worry about continuing your education. So how can a single mother at age of eighteen afford to go to college and take care of her child at the same time? Fortunately, the government can provide you with a financial aid to ease the burden for you.

Financial aid

There are many types of financial aids that can help a single mother continue her academic pursuits. In order to get these grants, you need to fill out a form from the Free Application For Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. The application process will take around three days to a week, but once you have completed the requirements, you will be able to start college right away. The requirements for applying for this program include:

* being a valid citizen of the United States

* social security number

* a high school diploma or a general education development certificate or pass and approved ability-to-benefit test

* be enrolled or accepted as a regular student working to attain a specific degree.

Aside from these requirements, your eligibility for financial aids also depends on the income tax of your parents or dependents. So if you are a single teenage mother but your family is well-off, then your application for these aids may be denied by the federal government. The amount of funds that the government will provide you will also depend on your income tax. So the single moms with a high income tax who are accepted in the program may be funded a lesser amount of money. Once you have been accepted, you will also need to keep a certain grade point average in order to maintain your aid.

Government Grants provides detailed information on Government Grants, Free Government Grants, Government Business Grants, Debt Relief Government Grants and more. Government Grants is affiliated with Federal Government Grants.

A few years back my sister became pregnant and had to quit school. She had gotten behind in high school, because of a troubled family. She finally decided she had to finish and though one year behind, finished high school Her plans were to go on to college, which she did. It was her pregnancy that put a stall on these plans.

She paid for her first semester out of her own pocket, with money she had earned from a summer job. When she became pregnant, she was pretty much on her own, without any help from the father or his family. Although she had every intention of going back to school, realizing how important it was for her to getting a decent paying job, she was struggling to just keep up with the mounting hospital and baby bills. She barely had enough money to support herself, let alone pay for an education. She was also worried about who would baby sit her son while she was attending school, even if she could figure out to get there.

My sister had excellent grades when she did attend, so it would be a shame if she could not raise the money to continue and ultimately complete her education. The lack of funds should not be the major hindrance that it once became. Her impressive transcript of grades I thought should help her continue. I told her about grants that the US government has for single parents, especially single female parents. Since many students are encouraged to get loans, ultimately leading them to drown in debt, she felt that this would never be an option. Single parents are often denied scholarships to help pay for school fees and living expenses for this reason.

Government grants, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back. Grants in amounts up to 40,000 to 50,000 dollars are readily available to students who are 18 years old and above. Most of the grants cover tuition and a small amount is left for books. Depending on the grant, sometimes books are covered.

To get a government grant for tuition, it is wise to contact the school where you wish to attend financial aid office. They will be able to guide you in the right direction. Many times, if you do not persist, they will gear you towards loans that will have to be paid back. Many people use such loans, with a combination of grant proceeds to live off of. A much better idea would be to obtain the grant and apply for a work study program that many universities offer. You will need to find out what requirements there are for the grant. A popular grant that many schools offer is the Pell grant. A Pell grant has a few stipulations. The student must be drug free and maintain a satisfactory grade point average.

You can find out more information about government grants for education by visiting your local school or visiting their website. There is also a wealth of information on Pell grants and similar grants on the internet. Obtaining a grant and continuing your education does not have to be a complicated process.

Scholarship and federal grant money are readily available for a single mother desiring to attend university. The uncertainty of being able to afford the tuition fee is one of the main concerns many single parents fear when considering higher education.

The information a single mother needs to determine if she qualifies for a university scholarship federal grant to offset these costs can be found by searching online, visiting a library or enquiring at federal agencies. Finding single mother university scholarship federal grant money is easy.

However here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
* Narrow your search by focusing on the single mother university scholarship federal grant that best suit you. For instance, if you plan to study at a local university, do not include out of state single mother university scholarship programs.
* Do not assume that because the information about the scholarship or federal grant does not spell out that it is a single mother university scholarship federal grant that you cannot apply. Apply for grants liberally.
* Ask questions about any scholarship or federal grant that seems to meet your other criteria. For example, if it’s for a nursing degree or engineering degree, these should be specified.
* Checkout grants for individuals under the nontraditional, reentry, or adult students program. Because of the many diverse circumstances in our society these grant programs are becoming more available at major universities.
* One of the most overlooked areas for advancing education for a single mother is through online university degree programs. These may also be eligible for single mother university scholarship federal grants under newer programs.

You will also need to know how to apply for single mother university scholarship federal grants. The way you write your application and the type of information you provide can make the difference between getting the financial aid you need and being denied. The most important advice here is to never omit pertinent information. Answer all the questions to the best of your ability. And don’t be afraid to do research for inspiration. This little extra effort will give you the edge over other single mothers and general scholarship applicants.

Many universities offer a single mother university scholarship federal grant program. Both mature and young mothers can access some of the single mother university scholarship federal grants, however many are specifically for older, more mature students in special circumstances. Don’t allow this caveat to sway you. As a single mother you’re probably qualified.

Begin with making a list of the universities you are interested in attending. You can gather significant amounts of scholarship information just by visiting websites all over the internet. If you cannot understand all the information on the website or you need clarification, pick up the phone and call the financial aid office. I have found this to be the greatest and quickest way to learn the language of university scholarship federal grant terms and get those in between questions answered. Even if the university itself does not offer single mother university scholarship federal grants they may well know where you can get help.

Single Mothers Need to Develop the Proper Attitude to Get Free Grants

The majority of the population allows financial concerns to dominate their lives. Generally, you have a choice. You can worry and make it the center of your life or you can do something about it. Living paycheck-to-paycheck is not fun nor does it support the things you want in life. Many people actually spend the bulk of their paycheck before payday. Overspending, non-existent savings, scraping and scrimping on every imaginable expense are common issues people deal with daily. Single mothers supporting families have a rising tide of support.

You probably seen advertisements like this all the time…”the government could not give away billions of dollars in grants and scholarships”. It is not because they don’t want to. The reason is that few single mothers apply for them. This reminds me of a popular saying, “people will put a band aid on the pain rather than take action for gain.” The pain is living below ones means when it is neither necessary nor desirable.

Free grants for single mothers with families are available. A single female parent, for example can get a school grant easier than the average person seeking academic financial aid.

But you guessed it. It’s not going to happen without diligence, perseverance and making grant seeking your personal responsibility. I could list dozens of places that you could apply for grants and financial aid. But I am not going to list them here. You may ask why. Well, it is because unless you make the commitment to search out such programs you won’t value the information. The effort you put into searching yourself is proportionate to your desire for success.

I am going to challenge you to motivate yourself. Until you develop your own motivation through applying what you learn, nothing I hand you will have value and nothing happens. I know you have to work. So does everyone else. I know you have family responsibilities. So does everyone else. I know you have only twenty-four hours a day. So does everyone else. My advice is to read biographies of great women who overcame seemingly unreal obstacles. That’s your reality check of why I can’t accept your excuse.

Take the initiative and make applying for a single mom grant a project. The effort you put into searching out, applying for and following through on the grant process will return many times fold. A free grant for single mother families will create a better life for you. It can give you a slight edge that will make or break your future.

Free grants for single mother families can be found through internet searches, contacting local city halls, contacting the admissions office at your local college or asking the librarian in your local town where you should start. The information you need to apply for such grants is readily available. Become a detective and keep asking questions. Eventually you’ll find one, two and more grants you are qualified to receive. Never accept no as the answer. Just when most single mothers are so close, they back off. Don’t be a quitter. Ask one more question, research one more resource, click over to one more webpage or make one more trip across town.

Think of it this way…free grants available for single mother families are a positive step for the future for everyone. If one child’s home life can be improved, this does volumes for our community because one person DOES make a difference. That especially means you “single mother”.

One of the hardest things about being a single mom is finding enough money to pay the bills. Debt is a reality for many Americans, but for single moms financial problems can be even worse. Having enough money to pay rent or mortgage, buy groceries, and take care of the kids is a lot for one person to handle. Thankfully, there’s help available. You just need to know where to look.

A good place to start would be talking to non-profits in your area that offer Government financial help for single moms. These wonderful organizations offer housing assistance, employment assistance, and even tuition assistance. Check the phonebook, local non-profit listings, and the internet for opportunities in your community.

Federal and state governments also offer programs to help single mothers in need. Look up the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, program in your state and contact them for help with food stamps, job training and placement assistance, and financial aid. For help paying your energy bill, contact your utility company first to see if they can offer any assistance. You can also contact the Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, to request assistance with your heating bill.

Another option is to apply for grants set aside for single moms. To find available grant money, simply search the internet for “grants for single mothers” and a long list will appear. You have to apply and be accepted for grants and different programs will have different expectations. Apply for the ones best suited to your particular situation.

There are also many ways you can earn extra money without sacrificing time with your children. You could watch other children during the day or in the evenings while you take care of your kids. You could watch other people’s pets while they are away, clean a house or two a week, or look for freelancing jobs you can do from home. If you have a special talent or hobby, consider turning it into a business. There are many things you can make, bake, write, craft, or create that you could also sell.

Paying the bills as a single mom can be tough, but you don’t have to go it alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are programs out there that have been specifically designed to help single moms who are having trouble making ends meet.

Single mothers listen up. Here is the same advice my daughter gets, who is a single mother. You become like the people you hang around. If they are at your same socioeconomic level you will never become an accomplished single parent unless you break the cycle. If you want to be a homeowner, hang out with homeowners. If you want to make $100,000 a year get around those people. Dump the friends that are going nowhere fast. This the first rule. You will face alienation and ridicule from the same friends that helped to influence the same behavior that got you in trouble. Break the ties for your children’s’ sake!

School grants for single mothers are available. Stop being the victim and be the victor. We all make mistakes, but as a single mother, you can change. It takes work and time so be patient but persistent. Find the grant money you need and determine to make the best of it. The internet is a storehouse of information, tools, and opportunity. Ditch the cell phones, pagers, and text messaging. Buy yourself a computer, get online, and make your life happen. There is simply no excuse for crying the blues day in and day out.

Change comes to those who are willing to do what it takes. An excuse is just another word for lazy. Apply for as many grants and scholarships as you can. There is someone out there to give a wanna be single mom achiever a second chance.

Scholarships for single moms are available to those who have the drive and are willing to correct their past mistakes. Before you became a single mom, you probably had all kinds of opportunities to go to school. You were eligible for grants, loans, and scholarships based on your academic achievement. Ask your parents what you were good at if you can’t remember. And if they can’t give you answer or you don’t have that dream anymore, get a new one. Then realign your priorities. Life is a game but you must be prepared to win. Winning involves taking personal responsibility for every aspect of your life.

Financial support and assistance for single moms is designed to give you a new start. I see so many young single mothers using this resource as a reason to do nothing. You can’t stay up all night, hang out with friends all day, eat lousy food, drink more than you need or heaven forbid use drugs to pass the time away.

A young single mother is an adult with responsibilities. If your environment is not causing you to stretch and grow then you’re wasting your life. Get help from a mentor who is where you want to be. Ask a successful person for advice, they will show you exactly what you need to do. Ask someone who is not where you want to be and they’ll offer an opinion. When you get the assistance, you need for school or housing or taking care of life’s expenses treat it like you earned it and more will follow.

You don’t have time to seek dating as single parent. Your time is too valuable. The person that sees you as an achiever is also an achiever. The dating will come in time. But for now focus on securing your housing, getting the assistance you need, developing your single parenting skills, becoming a successful young single mother and caring for your child. The eligible bachelors will beat the door down to get to know a woman that kind of potential.

A young single mother and the “right” friends will cheer you on, help you keep striving to finish her education, and won’t belittle your situation. If this describes your friends, you are on the right path. If not, change your situation and you change your life.

Now go review the resources we’ve put together especially for you. There is no reason on this planet that you cannot be the person you want and need to be.

Joel has written a number of books and articles for single moms.
