Valdosta, GA, United States (AHN) – A former Valdosta State University student who was expelled for protesting how his college wanted to spend student fee money has won a federal suit against the former president of the university.

Hayden Barnes was expelled from VSU in 2007 after protesting against then-president Dr. Ronald Zaccari’s plan to spend $30 million of student fee money on parking garages, according to reports.

Barnes sent out e-mails and posted flyers voicing his concern over the multi-million dollar project.

After he was kicked out of VSU, Barnes filed a suit in federal court. Last Friday, Judge Charles Pannell Jr. ruled Zaccari violated Barnes’ constitutional right to due process when he expelled him without a hearing.

According to Pannell, the only issue remaining in the case is that of damages.

Since his expulsion, Barnes has graduated from Kennesaw State and is currently in law school in Baltimore, reports stated.
